FAQ'sWelcome to our ever-evolving knowledge base. While we strive to have the questions you may have about out products/services already answered here; we are not psychic. Please drop us an e-mail us at faqs@chriscoconsulting.com if your question is not answered here and our engineers will post it and an answer to it on this page. 1. What ultimately determines processor performance? 2. What is Cache? Cache (pronounced: cash) - Is high speed, very expensive memory that is built directly into the processor. For those that understand cars, cache is to the processor as a properly pressurized fuel rail is to the engine. If there is not enough pressure in the rail, when you hammer the accelerator, your sports car is going to fall on its face. The same is true with processors and that is why a computer with what you thought was a smoking processor is slow out of the gate (when you launch applications, etc.). 3. How much memory should I have? It does not matter if you are running XP with SP3 or Vista with SP1; you need to have AT LEAST 1GB of ram, but 2-3GB is far more desirable. Given the cost of ram currently ($24/GB retail), we recommend that people are running 4GB of Ram even if all you do is basic functions like Office 2007 (Pig of a program), internet browsing, e-mail, etc. The more ram the better, but unless you are doing graphic design right now, you won't see much benefit to having more than 4GB at this moment. Paul has come to the conclusion over the years, that you should have at least 4 x the Ram your Operating System (Windows) wants to use. Since Vista Sp1 and XP SP3 want to use 768MB to just sit idle and do nothing for you; then that’s where the 2-3GB comes into play. This is the minimal recommended amount, with 4GB being the preferred. 4. What is the slowest component in a computer? The hard drive! Hard drives are mechanical using bearings, motors & actuator arms to read and write your data. Since ALL of your programs (including Windows) and files are stored on the hard drive; it is constantly being utilized by the computer. When your computer has insufficient Ram, the Operating System compensates for this by using a block of your hard drive as what is called Virtual Memory. The O/S is constantly reading and writing to this section of the hard drive, which is extremely inefficient. Not to mention the fact that the harder you work anything mechanical, the shorter it's life span. 5. What makes one hard drive faster than another? 3 primary factors determine the performance of a hard drive: 1. Interface: IDE is the old obsolete standard with a maximum data transfer speed of 133Mbits/sec. SATA is a newer interface with a data transfer speed of 150Mbits/sec. SATA-II is the newest interface with a transfer rate of 300Mbits/sec. iSCSI is a standard used in centralized storage solutions like Storage Area Network (SAN), etc. 2. Rotational speed or RPM's. A few speeds are available now: 7,200 RPM 10,000 RPM 15,000 RPM 3. Cache: This is just as critical for a hard drive to have as it is for the processor. The bigger the hard drive's capacity, the more cache you need to have for it to perform well. Remember, size is worthless if it is not being utilized properly! 6. Why are you guys IT's? ALL of our Engineers love technology and that is a fundamental element to us hiring them. We all genuinely love what we do for a living and this is not considered work to us. IT's are in a unique position as we have the ability to make an organization become ultra efficient, immensely productive and insanely profitable. We know we can help any business owner that gives us the opportunity to do so! 7. Who can't you help? We can not help the business owner that wants to do everything themselves and we will not engage in business with them as well. Some people do not see value in what a highly skilled and experienced IT can do for their business and that is fine by us. There are plenty of savvy business owners out there that see the value and know that once you find an incredible IT company and engineer, you embrace them and allow them to work their magic. We interview our clients before taking them on to make sure there is a good fit, we are going to be appreciated and compensated for our time and not kicked around over a couple of dollars because someone sees no value in what we offer. We have and will continue to fire clients that do not appreciate our responsiveness, efforts, experience, dedication and desire to help the organization grow. 8.
